Sapphire

Born and raised in Austin in the 1950s, Sapphire was exposed to everything from ethnic music to drama, ballet and art.  Some of Sapphire’s earliest memories involve painting at the Laguna Gloria Lagoon with an older sister.  Sapphire learned how to crochet from her Czech Grandmother (Babi) and how to sew from her Mother.  She developed a strong sense of her Czech roots through these women.  She was also exposed to early American music, Mexican culture and a love of beauty through her 2nd Mom.  Her Dad instilled an important love of nature and appreciation of drama, music, dancing, drawing and calligraphy.  Sapphire now paints with Cathy Harding, a Llano artist who has taught her to trust her instincts and flow with the medium.

A complex cat, Sapphire chose a career in science and worked for years curing diseases.  At the age of 40, she enrolled in “Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain”, which blew her mind.  This was followed by many other classes in drawing, painting, fused glass, mosaics, and anything else she could take.  Sapphire’s first art show was at the University of California San Diego in 2000, where she entered some of her conceptual art pieces.   Culturing both sides of the brain turned out to be a bonus for both her scientific and artistic careers, allowing Sapphire to “think outside the box” and solve problems using a wider perspective.  Sapphire continues to create in both scientific and artistic arenas.  She works as a scientist in Austin and writes children’s songs, paints, sews and generally plays in her studio.  Her oils are currently on display at the Circle on the Square Gallery in Llano, Texas.
